peep - Make a cheeping or beeping sound.
Toot looks ok.

Trevor - I think you might be on to something with FACES - I couldn't get an image of something suddenly appearing in a puff of smoke out of my mind!
Thanks, and yes I think TOOT is the noise and TO in 'both directions'.
I am still quite new to cryptic crosswords and sometimes even when you know the answer you can't see where it came from!
