The answer is surely is DISTRAINT but it is difficult to fit it precisely to the clue.

Absent minded is "distant" but it leaves R and I to fit "knight".

Sorry I can't help more.

distrait is not a word i've ever used, i think it is linked to distraught.

Thank you so much. Distrait is French for absent-minded but I was hooked on distant and got myself stuck!
