Thanks AB - I had already thought about drifters but could not find a definition anywhere that meant fishing boats but it fits in to the other answers so I'll go ahead with that - thanks again.

Surprising. Chambers gives- drifter noun 1 a fishing-boat that uses a drift net. 2 someone who moves from place to place.

Thanks for that explanation AB - I'll definitely look harder the next time.
