I'm still persisting as I'm determined this isn't going to beat me!
But I need some help!
8down Rising politician goes in to justify the future of France (6)
21 down Subaltern and his men lifted a weight(4)
35 across Topless lass, perhaps, and her lover turned over without one sharing a 'high' (7)
finally - 23 down (which I feel may be Isotherm?) A line used by meteorologists is different on earth (8)
Also can anyone point me in the right direction of the ten letter word to be written below the grid.
Otherwise I'm all filled in and highlighted - a miracle!!
All help VERY gratefully received
Thanks in advance
We're snowed-in here!

8D. Avenir (French for 'future')
21 Rotl (other ranks/backwards+lt/lieutenant[subaltern]backwards). It's a weight.
23 Isothere - is+other+e(ngland)
Without any letters, I can't remember 35 D.
These answers are the unmutilated versions.
The 10 letter thing is ...well, I'd say it was two words. Think of what you'd call an old issue of a maagazine. The second word is what all the highlighted things are.

Could the workings be:-
Topless lass (s)cot
Lover = lad reversed = dal
without one = i
Cotidal indicates coincidence of "High" or low tides
??
