tried to incorporate eg but can't make sense of it - any help gratefully received

I'd favour Tommy T's 'clue'. Alee is not to the left, but to the lee (or sheltered) side of the ship. Might be to the right!

For example, this is signal to keep left (4)

it's CLUE as in "For example, this is a" = CLUE
" this is signal"= CUE with L for left in it

The clue is very clear with absolutely no ambiguity.

"For example this ...."

What is this? It is a clue.

".... is signal (= CUE) to keep left (= L) also gives CLUE

It could not be anything else!
