I thought it was John Gilpin but apparently not.

I had to mistakes in the puzzle and I was pretty sure of all my answers except this one. Oh well. Suppose I'll find out tomorrow.

Definitely John Gilpin. 'John', like 'Can' is a synonym for WC. Soldier is 'GI' which, together with 'in', is holding 'LP' (record, obviously). No need to wait until tomorrow....
