I've got the grid filled in and the highlighting done, but I'm 'stumped' with "final syllables of the other eight unclued grid entries should each be abbreviated to the first letter of that syllable" i.e. with heath, I don't understand what letter to put at the end (OK I'm probably being thick!) All help appreciated. THanks in advance.

The unclued answer on the right hand side should give it away. All the rest follow that pattern exactly.

But I'm still non the wiser (must be old age creeping on!) the answer on the right hand side is Tawny (owl) but I've got tawny_
now, do I assume ney is nee? i.e tawnyn
Oh dear I'm feeling very thick at the moment!

I've no longer got the paper, but I think I ended up with tawnyo(wl)and heathh(en).
