I suspect that no.1 isn't really a question about a mathematical sequence (I may be wrong though) and that the answer - which escapes me - could come from somewhat more lateral thinking.

I'm off soon for a beer this evening, so I hope someone will solve it for you in the meantime.

i was thinking along the prime number line but there are too many missing ie 19 23, etc

but 273 is also absolute zero if this jogs someones lateral thinking or knowledge of physics

Hi.

The best I have come up with for no. 1 (and it's not good) is the answer 7.

Spell out the given numbers ('two hundred and seventy-three', 'seventeen', 'eleven' & 'five') and the number of letter 'e' in each is 5, 4, 3 & 1. 'seven' with its two 'e's could fit the pattern between 11 & 5.
