This is a clue in a local quiz and the answer is the name of a ship (or boat). It's cryptic. The clue is 'Grand Express' (6). I am totally stuck and would be very grateful for any ideas. The only answer I could come up with was 'cutter', but that's 100 not a 1,000.

Yes, UTTER = "express"

The C is problematic. Haven't found a definition that comes close to "grand", but your answer seems reasonable.

I know - I don't think there is a ship called mutter or gutter.
