Could the first one be FAZE?

not sure about that;don't know the word myself.
I've just put a clue of the same crossword into Google ("fate found me wanting")and found that there are a load of cheats out there;we all need a helping hand sometimes but to ask for 8 (yes eight )answers is ridiculous.Sorry not having a go at you .Just happens that you replied first .

Regards to all, sorry for my outburstTONY

Hi Tony, faze means 'to disconcert' and sounds like phase as in phases of the moon.

Hope this helps

Your nobleman is Ernani, an anagram of karenina minus the first and last. Ernani is the hero of an opera by Verdi. He starts out as a bandit but turns out to be Don Juan of Aragon.
