The clue is: Rope with which boy keeps lifting bucket? (7)

I have L?N?A?D

The answer appears to be lanyard but my dictionary tells me that there is an alternative spelling which is laniard. Both spellings fit the grid. Whichever spelling is correct I can't seem to fit the clue to the solution.

My question is, therefore, which answer is correct and how exactly does the clue fit it?

Laniard more correct to me -'lad'+'rain'(bucket, as a verb),reversed).

That sounds good - I got the lad bit but I didn't think of bucket as a verb.

Thanks, Chips.
