Happy New Year!

I set crossies just for pleasure. I wonder if some of you excellent regulars would like to try a few of my clues? Since they're new, no letters!

Please withhold solutions till 5 pm (GMT) to allow others to have a go.

1. Perceptively sigh when troublesome elderly cat’s put out (5-9)
2. Misleading two pelicans? (6-8)
3. Find second class at each end of the First Lady's train (5)
4. Mercy shown by man revealing old defensive weapon (12)
5. State he would notice (4)

Hope they're not too easy this week!

Hi V
Just post your questions. There are many solvers here far more adept than I.

BUT! I note you've already posted several queries and have had them expertly answered.

Good luck.

Your ELDERLY CAT'S PUT me at a loss. It's PRETTY CALLUSED of you; I'm UTTERLY SCALPED, and all over the place- like SPLUTTERED CLAY. By the way, I suspect Violetsky is a Russian spy who stuck an E at the end of his/her name to sound like an unassuming British puzzle-doer. You handled the query with admirable circumspection.

No Jolan, they are not too easy this week! I've gone from three right to one. Welcome back!

I have only three. Of course those old defensive weapons always get me. (Query: Does that make them offensive?)

The weapon can be used offensively I wouldn't fancy being hit by it

"Defensive" is so often euphemistic, isn't it?

You can imagine how startled I was when Phil swung that anthropy at me.
