The clue was CUT OFF THE CURLY TAIL SO SOMBRE ENDING.
My answer is ISOLATE ( anagram of tail so + ending of sombre) meaning of course cut off.
I don't understand the significance of the word curly, perhaps I am reading too much into it but I feel I am missing something.
Hope someone can help.

It is an anagram of TAIL SO and sombre ending (E is the end of sombre)

The anagram is indicated by "curly"

Surely it just means twisted,not straight,i.e. anagram,doesn't it?
