In this case, the full clue (from The Times cryptic crossword number 25401) which you described simply as "Pipe" is
Pipe, very unusually, united perimeter of court (9)

Knowing this information, anybody reading the postings can understand the niceties of the clue - and, if they do not understand, they have the opportunity to come back with another posting.

Agreed - I hadn't realised that was the full clue.
