Can anyone offer some clues to answer this?

A weak answer, but LUMP could be the odd one out as all the others contain another word..

ALARM - ARM
ANGER - AN
GARAGE - RAGE
HEAR - EAR
ITEM - IT
LEAF - LEA
LUMP - ??
RISK - IS
SPRITE - RITE

"Lum" is in Chambers as "a chumney so it may have a word in it as well....

I don't know the answer but note that they are all written in capital letters, when the question isn't, so could it be to do with the shape of the letters and/or the way they are written?

I think the odd one out is GARAGE. If you take the last letter of each of the others and move to the front, you get another word. Good luck.

Could it be something as simple as the fact that HEAR is the only one that isn't a noun?

Whysguy has thrown in a great solution, but I must say that AB got me thinking about the make up of the letters, and it reminded me of an old football trivia question/poser which read

What is unique about the football team Hull City
To which the answer was; Its the only team name in all the divisions that when written can't have any of its letters coloured in (not sure if that's still true)

The only word in the above list which fits this criteria is ITEM.

I've got a different answer, which I daren't give because it's a GFQ question and we might be thrown into outer darkness! Interesting, though: it seems perfectly valid to me, but the setter says firmly that there's only one acceptable answer.

Another GFQ question pastiche although this time you did ask for clues.
