Could it be Nematic? Chambers gives this as referring to a smectic (between solid and liquid) substance. Probably way off beam as can't tie in all wordplay

Thanks, AB - that sounds a possibility, I'd come up with nothing. Will try to get some of the crossing clues, see if I can get even one or two more letters.
