I love cryptic clues that make sense in their own right and this is my favourite,it's quite old and solvers will get it straight away.
AFTER TAKE-OFF SPITFIRE BELLY FLOPS IN THE DRINK.
8 letters.I'd love to know of your favourites.

yes it is aperitif ape=take off spitfire belly=ritif.Your clue =water.I first saw that clue in the Telegraph as i,j,k,l,m,n.

Love the water clues. Never heard of ritif!
I was once told of a clue as follows:
" (1,6,1,4)"
I love the idea of it but have always doubted if it complies with the accepted rules. I would prefer a single word answer with 8 letters. Any comments?

I love the cryptic definitions, as I think they are known. My particular favourite so far is:
