Actually Dotty, I'm only that clue (19d) short of finishing.

But you could give me a hand explaining two that are not sitting with me right, can't seem to catch the word play in these.

1a) Service very deficient in the hairdressers? One must try to improve business. (11)

S - L - S - E - S - N.

I'm going with Salesperson but can only see SALON

7a) Man who is wise coming out with a Latin phrase (4,7)

H - M -, S - P - E - S

Man = Homo Sapiens which is Latin... but is that it?

thanks Les40 and Paul. Sorry, can't help with an explanation for homo sapiens, it just fitted and I knew it must be the right answer, without really understanding why!

Sapiens comes from the Latin word for wise, in English we have sapient and sapience meaning wise or wisdom.Homo means man or the human genus. So, to me, homo sapiens is a Latin phrase for "man who is wise".
