_D_O_N_ (7 letters)

Clue: Combined notice first from French professor.

All I can think of is "adjoins" or "adjoint" but I can't figure out why !

It doesn't fit the length (7) or your checking letters, but ADDED ON (5,2) looks a good bet.

AD (notice) DE (from French) and DON (professor)

Hi George G
This clue was also puzzling me , and after some research, ADJOINT seems to correct. A French mathematician Charles Hermite was first to use the word in relation to equations. Wikipedia will tell you all!

Cheers

It seems the compiler of this crossword (one Peter Chamberlain) has been taking English Literature classes from George W Bush.

17D - Most of old castle a youth demolished (8) - RUINATED

Now I've heard of RUINATION as a noun but RUINATED as the past participle of a verb? Hmmmm.
