Thank you I thought Brim (know it is wrong) but am just starting to do crosswords the cryptic ones. It would be a great help if you could explain prim. Get the rim but how P to make prim. Thank you both very much

'P' often means soft in crosswords - it's a musical term (pianissimo, meaning very soft).

P is a cryptic crossword staple, as the initial letter of "piano" - the musical term meaning subdued, soft or softly.

Not quite, Chips. Pianissimo means very soft, but its abbreviation is PP. Piano means soft.

so Pianissimo is PP and piano is P so these are sort of code words to remember? Thanks both
