5 d. :"One bird (rook, oddly flew into another" H - R - N
presumably HERON - but why?

45 d ": "Some bristles at end of snout hurt" T-C-E Is this "Tache" (short for moustache).

Explanations of word play in both cases would be appreciated......

1st and 3rd letters of Rook inside Hen.

Heron is Hen inside RoOk
Tache is end of the word (scent,I think it was, + ache/hurt).
