Decreased by Emerson's "transitions of trade" p-e-sed. Looks like pressed but can anyone explain why?
P.S. nothing to do with Moby Dick, it's just the name of the crossword.

De-crease, iron or press clothes. Not sure where Emerson comes into it though!

De-crease - to remove creases or iron or press.

Thanks Sallyw and filmfan but it was an explanation of the Emerson bit I was hoping for. The poet or someone different?

I think "pressed upon by the transitions of trade" is a quote from Ralph Waldo Emerson in "English Traits".

Thanks AB, I had looked up his quotable quotes but didn't find that. Don't think I'll be having it for bedtime reading any time soon!
