Thanks for any help and explanation , the compiler was Tim Moorey and I am not on his wavelength particularly , I have a number of answers that are almost certainly right but I cant see why !

a game called tipcat fits the clue.

Pressure (pounds per inch? - pi) in "tact" (diplomacy gives "tipcat" - a game.

one pressure = ip
inside tact (diplomacy) backwards (recalled)

Thanks everyone for the lucid explanations as well as the answers ! I was beginning to wonder whether the 'A' starting 2 down should be an 'E'.....as 1a is a plural ie 'mAn fridays' might be grammatically incorrect , so replace with 'mEn fridays'....!!!
