If something is surplus to requirements (i.e. extra) it is "gash"

Thanks Brackendale. Bit dubious I think although I know gash is a term used in the Royal Navy and on airlines for rubbish, I wouldn't really have applied it to score meat, for example.

I'm even having trouble with Rufus in the Guardian today ... but not letter the begger get the better of me!

Wendy, Chambers gives 'gash' a definition of 'extra,spare', under the definition of 'gash - to cut deeply'.
