sorry Bernie. I remembered the answer, but couldn't find the xword. Have now found it. The clue was "putting on a diversion by armed criminals (2,6)

The great "T" trombonist was more my father's era, but he was still going strong in the 60's I believe. He seems to pop up in crosswords quite a lot, because of his surname !
