Thanks - 'sleeveless' came to me earlier, but I discarded it, because I couldn't see the rationale. Thanks for explaining.
I got 1 Across - 'messiest'.

The sky cataloguer is Charles Messier reduced gives MESSIE and 40% of stars is ST together gives MESSIEST

Thanks for the reasoning behind 'messiest' - I knew it was right, because of the letters I had, but didn't know where 'Sky cataloguer' fitted in!

I've stalled on this, any help much appreciated.
