Hi Theambler,

Still a few short myself, but the explanation for 51 Down is

US President is Rutherford HAYES as said above
and a state of confusion is a HAZE which would be evident to the audience who are listening.

Its a sounds like or Homophone

Hi THEA

WOW, that was a coincidence, I have just come on to check progress and your post just popped up. I aint been on much because I've been working more lately.

Anyway, I have finished the Jumbo Cryptic 948, but I am still a bit dubious about the word play in a couple of clues, so maybe you or any of the others could shed some light on these.

14a) One making attempt to hug two maidens - pragmatist keeping options open. T-I-M-R

I'm having Trier with 2 Ms = triMMer, but can't see the pragmatist angle

24d) Do it for example as such a US cook? (5-5)

-H-R-/O-D-R

I'm thinking Short-order, why?

A short-order cook is someone who can prepare simple dishes quickly - usually working in diners and fast food restaurants, so I assume this is where the U.S reference comes in..

Have copied this description of Trimmer :
A person who keeps their options open ( and adapts their views according to prevailing political trends for personal advancement)
