"flag showing major shipping hazards (5,3,4)" - i'm sure this is "stars and bars", because of the "sand bars" bit for shipping hazards, but i was just wondering if anyone can tell me why "major" means "star"?

Probably in the sense of major meaning star - best - first, whatever. Then you have "sand bars"
