2D "Recess?" I ask. "No no!" (4)

I have ?PS?

It has to be APSE (recess) but I can't explain it with that clue !!

Can anyone explain it to me ??

I can't explain why it should be apse, other than having the p and s already in place. I would have thought NOOK would have better fitted the clue. (no ok)?

I agree that NOOK would fit the clue but the P and the S are 100% certainties!

It's definitely apse
Recess = apse
I ask no no -- I is "a" (being one not I)
+ pose with no "o" in it , giving the "pse"

I'm still missing something; why is 'no no' 'no o'?
Perhaps I'm a bit slow this morning!
