Totally stumped.
1a Symbol of something spiritual
S_C_A_I_T.
I'm thinking something's wrong... the 'I' maybe and the answer is 'Sacrament', but even then it's not really right. and that causes problems with the 'I'. Any help gratefully received.

I would also say sacrament. What is the clue with the troublesome "I"?

I still think the clue is weak for 'Sacrament'... but hey ho..
And I've not heard of 'Excision'... but that's the joy of crosswords I guess.
