3 down "Halfway through schooner, surrounded by drink ?" - I'm sure the answer is "Amidships", but why ?

I may be wrong but I think it is just that the halfway point in a ship (schooner) is "amidships". The reference to drink is meant to be the sea rather than sherry.

I think it's just a cryptic definition. A schooner can be both a sailing vessel and a type of drinking glass. If you're "in the drink", you're in the sea or ocean.

many thanks, all of you. It is unusually cryptic, I was looking for "compartments",as is normal in DT cryptic crosswords, (two ways to get to the answer) and wondered if "ship" was a reference to "drink" (as in "he shipped some stuff !!"). If that was so, what did "Amid....s" mean ?

I think sometimes we look too hard and discount the obvious. The compilers don't always convince us do they?
