I have 4d ("male on track having turned up for colourful birds") as "merops". It can't be anything else (can it?). It works out as m + "spore" reversed. However "spore" is "a unicellular reproductive body". Spoor means a track or trail, but there is no alternative spelling (not in Chambers, at least). Can anyone explain? Surely not a mistake by Azed?

I thought exactly the same as you and kept searching for more defns of spore to no avail - can't be anything else though like you say!

I e-mailed Jonathan Crowther (Azed) yesterday
about this clue but haven't heard back yet.

When I do I'll post any comments.
