I didn't give much/anything by way of explanation - I just took 'split' as equalling tear,rent,rip. Am not sure what the double brackets bit means!

sallyw. I've just started logged on and seen your thread about the Times 24951 27a and Chips & Tommy's answer and explanation of 'split'. Chambers defines 'spit' as, inter alia, an 'exact replica' and thus is the 'double' that brackets 'left' - or am I being slow on the uptake and you had all already seen this?
