Quick post, then out to the sunshine...

"College head's study has one" = Dean.
"It was used to pick up sounds in sewer" = needle.
"Scottish flower clipped as unwanted plant" = weed.
"Sound that's normal on French river" = noise. (I initially had 'Seine' which I thought was quite good...).

"College head's study has one" = Dean ... ('a' inside 'den')
"It was used to pick up sounds in sewer" = needle ('needle' on record player and used by a person who sews.)
"Scottish flower clipped as unwanted plant" = weed ('tweed'=river - 't')
"Sound that's normal on French river" = noise. ('n'=normal + 'Oise' =name of french river).

Thanks lads. I really must remember to start seeing the alternative pronunciations of words like 'sewer'.

"wicked" is one that always gets me. It can mean having a wick, like a candle.
