I've seen several references to "Chambers" on the site. Is this the Chambers Crossword Dictionary? If so I shall invest in one.

Good morning rambler,

We use the Dictionary when outside in the garden, or the online version both of which can be found here:

Thanks, Wendy- that's why I'm asking. I use a Concise Oxford but I was wondering about the crossword dictionary.

We tend to do the Guardian and FT. I'm not sure about FT but The Guardian said (or says) that all the answers would be in Chambers. We also have the Shorter Oxford - 2 big volumes but very rarely use it unless it's to check up on Chambers!

Thanks,Wendy. I do know about the Chambers dictionary but they do a different one called Chambers Crossword Dictionary and I wondered if the seasoned solvers used it and if so how good it is.

Apologies for prattish behaviour - I am resolved to learn how to read.

Yes, we have the Crossword Dictionary which we got at the same time as buying the ordinary one - it was a special offer with Amazon and probably still is. We've never even opened it, I'm afraid to say. Just looked at price on back cover and it says £25.00

See how you get on, but if you want it and are happy to pay the postage I'll send it to you! Reckon it'd be cheaper with Amazon even then though.

Sorry I can't help.

Hi,

I seem to remember that at one point A.J.T. recommended the Chambers Crossword Dictionary.

And If It was good enough for her, I would take that as an endorsement.

An essential reference is Bradford's Crossword Solver's Dictionary. This is used by setters when compiling their puzzles.

The Chambers dictionary of choice is this: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Chambers-Dictionary/dp/0550102892

I think there is a new version being released.

There are lots of on-line dictionaries available, and the on-line OED (the full version) can be accessed by using your Library Card number to log in: http://www.oed.com/

Wendy, thanks for your wonderfully generous offer but I can't possibly accept. If the feedback is positive you may decide to open it after all!
