trevor thought it might be 'span' right back on page 1. I'm in favour of 'steer', but that is a bit tenuous with the second part of the clue.

I still think (life)span is a good bet.

I see that no6 seems to be giving problems. How about STEERAGE. Follow a course STEER-duration of life-AGE.
STEERAGE is a class of travel(in former days)in a passenger ship with the lowest fare.
