25d: Property on philosophy that's evenly balanced first to last (5) I've got q?a??e. presumably quake but I have no idea why.

Also 16ac: Keep Pimm's first on ice (8). The answer is preserve ie first letter of Pimms and then reserve but why should reserve mean 'on ice'

On a more general point this setter, Tim Moorey, is abstruse to the point of exasperation. Is it just me or are other people finding the same?
