Mrs OBBM, you'll have to catch up as this The Week is already being worked on.
I need a bit of guidance though so trevor heres where you come in.
28a. Twice very adrift, check on spring for ever. (7)
I have E_E_N_L, so assume Eternal.
Also
5d. Engineer with wide view. (6)
I have WA_GLE. Wangle. Is engineer used, as in 'to fix something'?

Also I checked the solution given to a solution from two weeks ago (The Week 653):-

Have cheese sandwiches and chocolate cake (7)

The solution I submitted was (as suggested in this forum) Brioche.
However the solution is Br(own)ie, which of course makes much better sense.

WANGLE is definitely correct and ETERNAL is the only word which fits your letters, but I can't correlate it with the clue.

Hi Wombat.

Possibly this ...

'vet' (check) on 'vernal' (of Spring) less the 2 letter 'v' to give 'eternal' ?

Thanks John
I was thinking that vernal was used less the v (very) but can't see the final tie, why twice?

Sorry JimC
our replies crossed in time
Now that you have pointed out vet for check it responds to the 2nd v. Thanks

Hi wombat,

I think you mean Jim, but thanks anyway for the compliment.

\"Twice very adrift\" = missing two \"v\" from \"VET\" (check) + \"VERNAL\" (spring).

I must say that is an excellent clue.

Hi all,
We are stuck on 27 across, "Some recipe set aside for Spanish bread as before".
Got the letters _E_E_A_ so thinking SEVERAL (to mean "Some") or possibly RENEWAL (to mean "as before") but can't work out the rest of the clue! Spanish bread is "pan" but can't get this to fit at all.
Any help very much appreciated!
