9a) Quickly heading away from Northeast by twelve inches (5)

S - I - T

I'm thinking Swift = Quickly

Heading away from Northeast = (S)outh (W)est + twelve inches = (F)oo(T)

Can't see where the I comes in, any help much appreciated.
