I am not from the UK and this may be UK related. The clue is:

"city center of Bainbridge, say? (8)"

I am sorry but I don't understand your answer here.
DOWNTOWN is the city centre but Baimbridge not in County Down.
Please could you explain to an ignorant Scot.

Ignore my previous post as I have just discovered it is in N I.
Geography was never my strong point!

I wondered about this too Joker. The town in Northern Ireland appears to be Banbridge, is it pronounced Bainbridge?

When in the clue it says 'say' at the end it usually means sounds like/alike or it could mean say as in an adage or sometimes even both meanings. Have been away from site until now hence only just replied. Hope that answer helps. The answer is most defo Downtown. Good luck all. Cheers, Simon

Just had a look at the puzzle online, and the spelling is Banbridge. The word 'say' in this usage means 'for example'.
