From an old Times crossword.

I'm flagging here to the point where I can't even get what look to be easy ones to complete.


DOWN CLUE:
Image of a man crushed by a beast, one up amongst the best(7).

- - O - I - -

ACROSS CLUE:
Manipulator drops wife who looks for compliments (6).

- - - L - R

Any thoughts, ideas or solutions would be appreciated.

NOTE: Last letter of DOWN clue is 2nd letter of ACROSS clue.
