9d) Sycophantic English and French books turned up (7)
S - R - I - E

I'm thinking it's Servile = Sycophantic
The word turned up would be ELIVRES
English = E

That would leave - Livres which is old French money - Which would work if it said French bucks - Bucks being slang for money

So can't grasp the word play with French books

Any help would be appreciated, Thanks
