I've done it again! Namely that I have completed the grid and worked out the method of entry of the six special clues and seen what the shaded areas have in common but I am no wiser as to solving the "problem".

I also do not understand the SMIR letters in the preamble.

I haven't seen the crossword but Smir is an old Scottish word for rain. Could that be your 'problem'?

That's interesting, thank you, but it doesn't seem to relate. In the six altered answers, you have to part of the word that has something to do with red at the front and in the grey areas the letters PIPE are used. I can't see any conncetion between red and pipe and solving a "problem" in order to get the correct title of the puzzle.

Aha, thank you, Tony! I first thought of A Study in Scarlet but there is a more appropriate title. Thanks again.

Hi hils

I should have made it clearer for Non EV solvers that some solutions are amended before entry into the grid. Winter Cherry is the solution from the wordplay but needs adjusting.
