From an old Times crossword.

Just a couple more to get.

Carry on climbing in quiet setting? That's the spirit(5).

S - - - H

All I can think of is SYLPH for a sort of fairy or spirit. Quiet setting could be SH.

Many Thanks.

Islands originally sheltering a large flightless bird (5).

S - M - A

This always looked like SAMOA but I had to look up flightless birds to discover there was one called a MOA, now extinct.

I've finished the crossword now but there is one I still can't quite figure out.

Fruit father always rejected (6).

P - - - Y -

I've got PAPAYA. It's a fruit and PAPA is father but I don't see the "always rejected".

Ay is an alternative spelling for Aye.
Rejected indicates backwards =YA

Yes Sammy.Up here in Scotland it's use is very common.
A fairly normal use is to sign a letter with the words Yours aye then your name.
