Rows with wild beasts? Good to escape! (5)

U_E_K

Not 100% on the U or the K -

The U comes from AMARACUS - A mum getting a thorn unfortunately when discarding old plant - the A MA is easy enough, but amaracus seems to be the only plant that fits.

The K is from: Fielder drinking masses of water when the sporting business has been half done - MID-WICKET, which again I'm not totally sure of. The mid seems fine, but I can't find any other field positions that would fit - ?I???T

Thanks for any suggestions

... is TIERS, I think ('tigers' without the 'g' for good).

Could the old plant be Amaranth?
(Can't quite see why)

MID-SEASON would fit ok (= MID-ON around SEAS).

Many thanks both.

Which leaves M?D-?I?S?T for the other clue. I may have to triple check a few clues first.

Thanks again

AMARANTH is correct. Many thanks

A MA + ATHORN minus the O(ld)

TIERS is also correct, easy with hindsight.

Working through the others to see where I've gone awry.

Thanks to Harrhy and JimC.

It was indeed Mid Season - MID-ON plus SEAS. Having looked at the clues around this one again, it\'s now put to bed.

Cheers.
