Sorry for being a bit late this morning. Enjoy!

I set crossies just for pleasure. I wonder if some of you excellent regulars would like to try a few of my clues? Since they're new, no letters!

It’s been suggested that solutions are withheld till 5 pm to allow others to have a go.

1. What-d'you-call-him's weedy and toothless (9)
2. An intimate affliction, possible Irish, in deer? (4,5)
3. Call to distribute salt at party for future reference (7,4)
4. Bar securing salvation (6)
5. Draw back following plant rot (9)

A thousand pardons for my late arrival.

Thank you all for having a go. A bit difficiult this week?

Neilm No.1 yes!
TAW 1,2,3 OK
AB. Not 'safety but poppycock, Yes!
AJT Yes and yes indeed for 'saving'.
Hi P@

1. thin + gummy. Verbatim def in Chambers = thingummy.

2. Anag of Irish in hart = deer. The ? signifies not all deer are harts. Main def of hair shirt (verbatim) in Chambers

3. CRY = call + anag of 'salt' = STAL + party = BALL and CRYSTAL BALL 'foretells the future' (= for future ref).

4. A double. Chambers Dict: saving = (prep) excepting. Chambers Thes: BAR = except for, excepting. Hence BAR = SAVING. e.g. They're all correct bar (saving) Jolan. And, of course securing salvation = saving.

5. Draw back = cock (as in, draw back {cock} the trigger). plant = poppy. Finally, draw back following plant = poppy + cock = poppycock = rot.

Hope these are acceptable explanations. Jolan
