Since it's C*CKLES,I don't see that it can be anything but CACKLES. Please explain why.

Like you, I am sure it is cackles but I can't really work out why. I thought it must be something to do with hackles.

Thank you Boltonian - it can only be cackles as cockles doesn't make sense but I can't explain the word play I'm afraid.

I thought of "see" = C but there is no indicator of that link - such as "sounds like" or "among hearers". Dare I say it is not a very good clue but a good talking point!
