I'm struggling with "Austens favourite (6,4)" being Vanity Fair.

Vanity Fair was written by W.M.Thackeray and published in 1848; the magazine was named after it, I guess, as it was all about society gossip and scandal.

Jane Austen died in 1817 and so would not have been aware of either Vanity Fair.

I feel I'm being thick. Does the clue refer to a different Austen or what have I missed?

I would have thought that "Austen's favourite" would be COUNTRY LIFE, but that is 7,4 and doesn't fit.
