Couple to go this week but have got stuck. Any help with these gratefully recieved.
30a. Canvas showing old woman accepted as pilot at sea (10). I have M-I-T-P-A-L. It has most of the letters of pilot, but I dont see the answer.
Also, to kick start the bottom right..
55a. Money laid out for military blockade (10). I have ---G-T---T.

I would very much appreciate the logic for main-topsail, please.
Being a great fan of the Aubrey/Maturin books of Patrick O'Brien, I bought a companion book of explanations. The number of different sails is extraordinary- my fav is mizzen topgallant staysail!

Hi Rosalind;


This is an anagram of "as pilot" at sea + main. This confused me when I did it, as I thought "main" for sea, giving a double use for "sea" How does old woman come into it? Maybe an obscure meaning of main?
In an earlier post I pointed out that several of these clues appeared inaccurate!
