It seems to be words that can be represented as a single letter like 16a H - Hydrant

But having just started it, I can already see problems!

I have ?N?H?Y??? for 9a and nothing fits!

dot dash dot dash - I have the same for 9a + the "A" from 4d.
49a answer could be WRONG - fits with the 2 down clues.
Your idea works for 41a too.
Back to the drawing board for some more across clues!

Although if I have 39d right - 51a starts Zm????

No - the across clues are all abbreviations found in Chambers.
e.g. 32a Q can be an abbrev for quetzal
